About this position

The VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research in Belgium is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join the Nucleic Acid Immunity Lab, led by Prof. Jonathan Maelfait. The research project focuses on innate antiviral immunity and autoinflammation, specifically investigating how the loss of function of the RNA editing enzyme ADAR1 leads to human genetic autoinflammatory diseases such as Aicardi-Goutières Syndrome. The project is part of a larger ERC-funded effort to understand the roles of Z-form nucleic acids in immune responses.

Candidates should hold or be about to obtain a Master's degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Bioengineering, or related fields. The ideal applicant will have a strong enthusiasm for fundamental science, attention to detail, and motivation to work collaboratively in an international research environment. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English are required.

The position offers a doctoral scholarship for one year, renewable for up to three additional years based on performance. Candidates are encouraged and supported to apply for independent fellowships such as FWO PhD fellowships. The lab provides access to state-of-the-art facilities, advanced training, and opportunities for career development and mentorship.

Applicants should submit their CV, motivation letter, contact information for two references, and university transcripts via the VIB online application tool. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews. For further information, candidates may contact Prof. Jonathan Maelfait. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in innate immunity, antiviral responses, molecular biology, and autoinflammatory diseases to join a leading research group in Belgium.
