Forschungszentrum Jülich, Institute for Advanced Simulations – Materials Data Science and Informatics (IAS-9), is offering a PhD position focused on the inverse design of microstructures for novel sustainable structural metals. The research aims to develop digital and inverse design methods for lean alloys, such as Al-Ca, suitable for additive manufacturing. The project integrates high-throughput simulations, data analytics, and material characterization to predict structure-property relationships and collaborates closely with experimentalists for material production and characterization.
Key research activities include developing automated workflows for microstructure reconstruction, identifying material parameters for crystal plasticity simulations, establishing structure–property linkages for AI/ML integration, and implementing inverse optimization frameworks for designing microstructures with desired properties. The successful candidate will have opportunities to publish and present research at journals and international conferences.
Eligibility requires a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, material science, physics, computational science, or related fields, with a preference for candidates focused on theory or simulation. Applicants should have a strong understanding of computational mechanics of solids, finite element methods, and/or spectral solvers, practical experience in at least one programming language (Python preferred), and Unix/Linux environments. Excellent English skills are essential, along with structured, analytical, independent, and reliable work habits, strong cooperation and communication skills, and an interest in working closely with experimentalists.
