The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel in Germany is offering a fully funded PhD position in Biology, with a focus on marine biogeochemistry, oceanography, and microbial ecology. The research group 'Metalloenzymes' led by Dr. Viktoria Steck is seeking a doctoral researcher to investigate the role of metalloenzymes in the nutrient metabolism of marine phytoplankton. The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) under the Emmy Noether grant and is part of the research division Marine Biogeochemistry.

The doctoral project will explore how marine phytoplankton adapt to nutrient limitations, particularly phosphorus scarcity, by producing metal-dependent enzymes. Research activities include laboratory experiments on microbial growth under varying nutrient conditions, biochemical characterization of metalloproteins, and advanced analyses using proteomics, transcriptomics, and genomics. Fieldwork aboard oceanographic research vessels and at time series stations is also part of the project. The candidate will collaborate with international partners and participate in the FYORD program for doctoral career development.

Applicants must have an M.Sc. in (Bio-)Chemistry, (Micro-)Biology, Molecular Biology, Biogeochemistry, Earth Sciences, Oceanography, Microbial Ecology, Genomics, or a related field. Essential skills include laboratory experience in biochemistry, data analysis (Excel, R, Python), and proficiency in English. Experience with mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, and willingness to join field expeditions are advantageous.

The position is for 36 months (75% FTE), with an estimated gross annual salary up to €57,708 (full-time equivalent, actual salary pro-rated), and includes benefits such as a company pension plan, 30 vacation days, and support for work-life balance.
