The Mathematics of Data Science group at Ilmenau University of Technology (TU Ilmenau, Germany) invites applications for a PhD position focused on mathematical research and algorithmic development within Project B08 of SFB 1294. This interdisciplinary project centers on the theoretical investigation of advanced methods, uncertainty quantification, and the design of algorithms using reinforcement learning, data assimilation, and causal inference. The research aims to develop digital twin technologies for personalized treatment strategies in various medical conditions, bridging mathematics, computer science, and medical science.

As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to the development and analysis of novel algorithms, particularly leveraging techniques such as particle filtering and statistical machine learning. You will be expected to publish your findings in leading journals, including those in the SIAM series, and present your work at national and international conferences, workshops, and meetings. The position also involves active participation in the organization of SFB 1294 events, collaboration with researchers in the Data Science Lab, and short research stays with international partners.

Applicants should hold a completed university degree (Master or Diplom) in mathematics, computer science with a mathematical focus, or a closely related field. Essential qualifications include solid knowledge in data assimilation, data science, statistical and machine learning, reinforcement learning, and statistics, demonstrated through excellent theses or coursework. Proficiency in English and strong programming skills (Python, MATLAB) are required. The ideal candidate will show commitment, enthusiasm, independence, initiative, and teamwork skills.
