The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is offering a PhD position in microbiology, focusing on cell communication in syntrophic microbial communities. The research is based at the Department of Molecular Sciences, BioCenter, Ultuna campus, Uppsala, Sweden. The project is part of the microbial biotechnology research group and aims to explore how microorganisms collaborate to drive sustainable energy solutions, particularly in bioenergy technologies such as biogas production and bioelectrochemical systems.

The doctoral project investigates the molecular mechanisms of microbial cooperation under stress conditions, where efficient teamwork is crucial for system performance and renewable energy production. Advanced anaerobic cultivation techniques and omics-based approaches (metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics) will be used to study cell communication and develop innovative cultivation systems and molecular tools. The ultimate goal is to enhance the stability and efficiency of biogas systems, contributing to a sustainable, circular bioeconomy.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in microbiology, molecular biotechnology, microbial biotechnology, or a related field, and be fluent in English. Experience with microbial cultivation (especially anaerobic), molecular methods, and basic bioinformatics is meriting. Strong analytical, collaborative, and independent work skills are valued.
