About this position
This PhD position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network ENDURE, focusing on sustainable polymeric barriers for molded cellulose-based fiber products. The project aims to advance the European packaging industry by developing high-performance barrier layers for fiber-based packaging, integrating synthesis, application, and modeling of structure and properties throughout synthesis, lamination, use, and recycling. The doctoral candidate will gain expertise in both fundamental research and industrial application, working closely with KTH and the industrial partner Yangi AB.
Supervision will be provided by Professor Ulrica Edlund (main supervisor), Professor Artem Kulachenko (KTH), and Dr. Mårten Alkhagen (Yangi AB). The position offers a dynamic, international research environment with collaboration across five universities, two research institutes, and eight industry partners in four countries. The successful candidate will develop advanced characterization and experimental skills, contribute to industrially relevant research questions, and benefit from a comprehensive training program designed to foster interdisciplinary engineering talent in natural fiber materials, product design, production technology, and digital manufacturing (Industry 4.0).
Funding is provided through the EU's Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, including a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral salary agreement (starting at 33,000 SEK/month, approx. 2,991 EUR), mobility allowance, and possible family allowance. The position is full-time and limited to four years, with the possibility of renewal according to Swedish regulations. Employment benefits and a creative, supportive work environment are offered, with a strong commitment to equality, diversity, and professional development.
Eligibility requirements include not having resided or had main activity in Sweden for more than 12 months in the past three years, a completed advanced degree or equivalent (minimum 240 ECTS credits, with at least 60 at advanced level), completed university courses in polymer chemistry, materials chemistry, or polymer technology, and English proficiency equivalent to English B/6. Selection will emphasize independence, collaboration, professionalism, analytical skills, and interdisciplinary work, with personal qualities highly valued.
Applications must be submitted via KTH's recruitment system by November 30, 2025.
