Description

Are you fascinated by how molecules harvest and manipulate light? The Molecular Photonics group at the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS), University of Amsterdam, invites applications for a PhD position focused on ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy of functional organic molecules. This research project aims to uncover how nanoconfinement controls energy and electron transfer processes using state-of-the-art time-resolved spectroscopy techniques. As a PhD candidate, you will conduct optical time-resolved spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR, fluorescence) on samples of functional organic molecules in both solution and solid state. You will operate advanced optical setups, prepare samples, collect and analyze data, and develop kinetic models. Collaboration within the Molecular Photonics team is central, and you will present your findings, contribute to scientific publications, and assist in teaching undergraduate and master students. The position is open to motivated applicants from any country who hold a recent MSc degree in physical chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field. Candidates should have a strong academic record, hands-on laboratory experience with spectroscopy, and a solid foundation in physical chemistry or chemical physics. Experience with time-resolved optical spectroscopy and coding in Matlab or Python is essential. The successful candidate will receive a temporary contract for 38 hours per week, initially for 18 months and extendable to a total of 4 years upon satisfactory evaluation. The gross monthly salary ranges from €3,059 (first year) to €3,881 (final year), with additional holiday and year-end allowances. The position includes a comprehensive benefits package: paid leave, professional development courses, pension contributions, and the possibility of a favourable tax agreement for non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities applies.
