The Department of Viral Immunology, led by Prof. Dr. Luka Cicin-Sain at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig, Germany, is offering a PhD position focused on cytomegalovirus (CMV) vaccine research. HZI is a leading institution within the Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest scientific organization, and is renowned for its research on infectious diseases.

The Viral Immunology (VIRI) department investigates viral infections using animal models and primary human cell systems to develop innovative vaccination and immunotherapeutic strategies. The offered PhD project centers on understanding humoral and T-cell responses to CMV infection, aiming to identify key determinants of protection and to develop novel vaccine concepts. The research will employ advanced techniques such as virus mutagenesis, real-time imaging of infection dynamics, multiparametric flow cytometry, and single-cell transcriptomics, in collaboration with international laboratories.

The department is recognized for its leadership in vaccinology and CMV immunology, providing a dynamic and supportive environment for young researchers. The successful candidate will join the HZI Graduate School, which offers a structured PhD program in Infection Research.

The position includes access to modern laboratories (including BSL3 facilities), state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation, and comprehensive biological profiling platforms. The contract is initially for three years, with a salary based on TVöD E13 (65%), and includes social security, flexible working hours, and 30 days of vacation.
