This PhD opportunity at the University of Sydney's School of Chemistry invites applications for a project focused on the chemical origins of life, specifically investigating how lightning and plasma processes could have contributed to prebiotic organic synthesis on early Earth. The Jiang Research Group experimentally simulates lightning strikes under prebiotic Earth-like conditions, exploring unique reaction pathways enabled by plasma and radical chemistry. The research aims to understand the formation of key chemical bonds (C-C and C-N) from inert and abundant starting materials, with a particular interest in the role of mineral surfaces and volcanic aerosols as reactive interfaces.
Current priorities include mimicking lightning and radiolysis processes and discovering new synthetic routes relevant to the emergence of life. The project is highly interdisciplinary, combining elements of organic synthesis, geochemistry, environmental chemistry, and chemical engineering. The group is seeking motivated, curious, and self-driven candidates who are passionate about solving complex scientific problems at the intersection of chemistry and earth sciences.
Eligibility requirements are stringent: applicants must have a major in Chemistry with a strong background in organic synthesis, a 4-year undergraduate degree with First Class Honours or a research thesis, or a Master's Degree (by research) by early-mid 2026. Prior research experience, preferably with publication, is required, along with excellent English communication skills and a GPA above 3.5/4.0 (or >85/100 or top 10% in class). Candidates must be graduating from one of the top 100 universities worldwide (preferably top 50). Only citizens of EU countries, UK, USA, Canada, Singapore, Australia, or New Zealand are eligible to apply.
