PhD Position: Transcriptional Regulation in Beetle Sociality Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung in Germany

The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung, a renowned institution for biodiversity and earth system research based in Frankfurt am Main, is offering a PhD position in the Department of Molecular Ecology at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (SBiK-F). This project, titled "Transcriptional Regulation in Beetle Sociality," focuses on uncovering the regulatory architecture underlying the evolution of subsociality and complex parent-offspring interactions in beetles. The research aims to bridge the gap in understanding the transition from solitary to subsocial lifestyles, a key step toward eusociality, using a multi-omics approach.

The successful candidate will conduct experimental work, including sample collection from eight beetle species across different parental-care phases, perform essential laboratory procedures such as RNA extraction and library preparation, and carry out bioinformatic analyses to integrate gene expression and epigenetic data. The project is highly collaborative, involving the Sandra Steiger research group (University of Bayreuth), Peter Biedermann (University of Freiburg), and modeling partners at LMU Munich and Coventry University. It is part of the interdisciplinary "GEvol: Genomic Basis of Evolutionary Innovations" consortium, funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG).

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related field, with a strong interest in evolutionary processes, genomics, and behavior. Experience with NGS data, R, or other programming languages is advantageous. Remuneration is based on the collective agreement of the state Hesse (TV-H) / E13, part-time (65%), for three years, with additional benefits such as a company pension plan and annual special payment.
