Description

The University of Alberta's School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering, within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, is offering four fully funded PhD positions starting September 2026. These positions are based in the Mining Optimization Laboratory (MOL), which focuses on research in simulation and optimization of mining systems, as well as mine planning optimization and design. The research leverages operations research, mathematical modeling, simulation, and intelligent agents to solve complex, large-scale mine planning and operations decision-making problems. Applicants should have undergraduate and master's degrees from reputable universities, with a strong academic background and high GPA in Mining Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computing Science, or Operations Research. Proficiency in English (high TOEFL or IELTS scores), computer programming, and databases is advantageous. Experience in mathematical programming and discrete-event simulation is also valued.
