About this position

The PRAISe Lab at the University of Colorado Boulder, led by Assistant Professor Chahat Deep Singh, is recruiting 1–2 highly motivated PhD students to work on cutting-edge research in perception, robotics, AI, and sensing, with a particular emphasis on drone autonomy and extreme low-power platforms. Research topics include autonomy frameworks for resource-constrained hardware and sensors, with applications in real-world drone systems.

Prospective students can apply through the Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or Computer Science PhD programs at CU Boulder. The Mechanical Engineering program is ranked among the top in the nation and offers customizable degree paths, specialty courses, and high-impact research opportunities in robotics, systems design, and more. The Robotics PhD program prepares students for leadership roles in academia, industry, and the public sector, with a curriculum that includes rigorous research, comprehensive exams, and dissertation work. The Computer Science PhD program emphasizes research in AI, perception, and related fields, with a supportive and diverse academic community.

All admitted PhD students receive full funding, including a graduate student salary, tuition remission, mandatory student fees, and 91% health insurance coverage. First-year students are typically funded as Teaching Assistants, with possible waivers for those with alternate funding sources. From the second year onward, funding is provided by research advisors or fellowships, with departmental gap funding available to ensure continued support.

Eligibility requirements include a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, computer science, or a closely related field, strong academic background in robotics, AI, perception, or hardware, and English proficiency for international applicants. Applicants must submit an online application, statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation, and transcripts. No GRE is required. The application deadline for Fall 2026 admission is December 15, 2025.

Interested candidates are encouraged to fill out the PRAISe Lab interest form in addition to their PhD application. For more information, visit the lab's LinkedIn page and the university's program websites.
