Description
The Intelligent Sensing Laboratory (ISL) at Simon Fraser University, led by Professor Behraad Bahreyni, is recruiting for multiple positions including Research Engineer, Postdoctoral Fellow, and Graduate Students (PhD and MSc) to join a collaborative project focused on developing high-performance MEMS-based gravimeters for field deployment. The research combines device design, microfabrication, experimental characterization, and real-world field access through industrial partnerships. The ISL is internationally recognized for its multidisciplinary research in MEMS, microfabrication, sensor signal processing, and analog circuit design, offering a collaborative environment and access to advanced experimental facilities.
Applicants for graduate positions should have expertise and interest in silicon microfabrication techniques, analysis and design of MEMS, sensor signal processing, and analog circuit design. MSc candidates must have a strong academic record from reputable programs, while PhD applicants are expected to have prior experience with design, fabrication, and characterization of micro and nano-devices, a strong research track record, and high academic standing. Postdoctoral candidates must demonstrate direct hands-on experience relevant to the project, with evidence of strong communication skills through publications and presentations. All applicants must possess strong communication and analytical skills, and the lab encourages applications from underrepresented groups.
Graduate researchers are funded through a combination of research and teaching assistantships, fellowships, and scholarships. Additional funding opportunities include Graduate Fellowships, Entrance Scholarships, and NSERC post-graduate fellowships for qualified Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Top-up awards are available for students holding NSERC CGS or PGS awards. The deadline for NSERC awards is typically in October of the year preceding the intended start date. The ISL is located in British Columbia, Canada, offering a vibrant research environment and access to the natural and cultural attractions of Vancouver.
To apply, candidates should email Dr. Bahreyni with a subject line indicating their level and intended start date (e.g., Student: MSc Sep 45 MEMS), include a summary of relevant experience, and attach a CV, transcripts, a relevant publication (if available), and contact information for three references. All graduate applicants must meet the minimum requirements set by the university and school, including a GPA above 80% and proof of English language competency (TOEFL IBT 93 with minimum 20 in each category or IELTS 7.0 overall with minimum 6.5 in each section). Formal application to the School is recommended to expedite the process. The review of applications will begin in January and continue until all positions are filled.
