About this position

The University of Graz invites applications for a Project Assistant (PhD student) position in the Department of Psychology, focusing on the FWF START project “The emotions we speak: predicting language change from speakers’ emotional attitudes to grammatical structures using formal linguistic tools.” This interdisciplinary research opportunity centers on psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and generative linguistics, with a strong emphasis on language and emotion processing. The successful candidate will independently and collaboratively plan, conduct, and evaluate scientific experiments, contribute to publication activities, and write a doctoral thesis in psycholinguistics related to the project’s themes.

Applicants must hold a completed diploma or Master’s degree in Psychology and demonstrate expertise in psychology, neurolinguistics, or psycholinguistics. Strong preference is given to candidates with a background in generative linguistics and language/emotion processing. The position requires an interest in experimental approaches to language, willingness to engage in highly interdisciplinary work, and readiness to learn research methods from multiple disciplines. Candidates should enjoy scientific work, possess an independent working style, show initiative, and have excellent team-building and organizational skills. Proficiency in MS Office is expected.

For admission to the doctoral program in Psychology (Faculty of Natural Sciences), a German language certificate at CEFR C1 level is required if the program is not completed in the first language. Application documents must include a cover letter, academic CV, a brief dissertation proposal (with flexibility to adapt to the project), proof of degree, proof of language skills, and two references. The University of Graz values diversity and inclusion, offering a supportive environment with flexible working models, healthcare, continuing education, and a commitment to zero emission goals. Qualified women and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

The position offers an annual gross salary of at least €52,865.40 for full-time employment (30 hours/week), with possible overpayment based on qualifications and experience. The contract is for three years, starting May 1, 2026. Applications must be submitted via the university’s web-based applicant tool by March 25, 2026. For further information, contact Prof. Svitlana Antonyuk ([email protected]) or Prof. Guilherme Wood ([email protected]).

Be part of a vibrant academic community at the University of Graz, where 4700 employees collaborate on future-oriented research and societal challenges. Join us in shaping the world of tomorrow through meaningful, interdisciplinary work in psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics.
