About this position

This advert will close once a suitable candidate has been found.Concrete is a fundamental building material essential to economic development and a substantial contributor to greenhouse gas emissions during its production. Concrete reacts with atmospheric CO2 in all parts of its life cycle (during use, following demolition, and subsequent use). Accounting for passive CO2 uptake during the service life, and maximising uptake following demolition, together with deep emissions reduction in the production of cement could result in a net negative CO2 emission during its life cycle. This PhD project will explore this vital in-service life carbonation of concrete and its possible use for creating a net-negative carbon footprint.This project is one of a number of projects hosted by the Centre for Doctoral Training in Green Industrial Futures. The CDT was recently awarded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council to Heriot Watt University (lead), Imperial College London, and the Universities of Sheffield and Bath. The CDT is further supported by contributions from industrial partners.The CDT boasts an exciting and challenging programme specifically designed for top performing junior researchers, in addition to the main area of research, including:Residential taught training courses at each of the partner universities to contextualise your research within the wider net zero industrial landscape.An industry challenge project with one of our industrial partners.An international opportunity in year 2 or 3 of the degree, with the option for a second international visit in year 3.A bespoke ‘net-zero leadership programme’, including regular exchanges with cohort members from the other universities.The project is four years full time, and includes full UK fees and stipends, plus budget for travel and consumables. The positions are in first instance for UK students, while in some cases also overseas students can be appointed.
