About this position

This PhD opportunity at Monash University, supervised by Professor Amanda Karakas within the Centre of Excellence for Astrophysics in 3D (ASTRO 3D), focuses on stellar astrophysics, particularly the study of low and intermediate-mass stars. The research group investigates stars with masses similar to or slightly larger than the Sun, exploring their evolution, nucleosynthesis, and the origin of elements in the Universe.

Students will engage in numerical simulations and theoretical studies to address fundamental questions such as the origin of carbon and other elements, the processes occurring during the red giant phase, and the impact of binary companions on stellar evolution and element production. Projects include studying weak CN stars in the Magellanic Clouds, stellar mergers, the effects of new carbon burning rates on the AGB-supernovae mass boundary, and the connection between novae and Type Ia supernovae. Collaborative opportunities exist with Professors Ilya Mandel and Alexander Heger.

As part of ASTRO 3D, students will interact with astronomers across Australia and internationally, gaining exposure to diverse fields such as cosmology, galaxy evolution, and advanced computational astrophysics.
