About this position

The University of Oslo invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow in Sociology as part of the project "Punishment as a Vehicle for Change? The Causal Impact of Norwegian Corrections on Reoffending and Reintegration in Norway and Beyond (NoReoffend)." This project, led by Professor Synøve N. Andersen and funded by the Research Council of Norway, aims to advance understanding of the intended and unintended consequences of punishment, using Norway as a case study.

The NoReoffend project employs population-wide register data and experimental methods to assess the causal effects of sentencing and correctional programming on outcomes such as reoffending, employment, education, and family life among sentenced individuals. The successful PhD candidate will develop a research agenda within these themes and contribute to the project's work package 1 (WP1). The position is based at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography, University of Oslo, in Oslo, Norway.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree or equivalent in Sociology or a closely related discipline. A strong academic record and demonstrated interest in punishment, corrections, or related research areas are expected. Experience with quantitative methods, register data, or experimental research is considered an advantage. Proficiency in English is required. The position is full-time (37.5 hours per week) and temporary, with funding provided by the Research Council of Norway.

For more information about the project or to discuss your research interests, you are encouraged to contact Professor Synøve N. Andersen at [email protected]. The application deadline is 30 April 2026. Detailed application instructions and the online application portal can be found at the JobbNorge website.
