About this position

This PhD project at the University of East Anglia investigates the impacts of Arctic climate change and sea-ice retreat on atmosphere-ocean interactions, focusing on mesoscale weather systems such as barrier winds, polar lows, and tip jets. Methodologically, the project involves investigating the structure and characteristics of barrier winds off East Greenland using new wintertime observations from Norwegian-led research cruises.

Numerical weather prediction simulations will be conducted using the Met Office Unified Model, examining both current and future sea-ice distributions to assess their effects on barrier wind structure and surface turbulent fluxes. Additionally, the project will analyze the frequency, characteristics, and ocean mixed-layer impacts of barrier winds and tip jets in present and future climates using state-of-the-art climate model simulations. Training opportunities include hands-on experience with climate model output, data analysis, and potentially participating in an autumn 2026 research cruise.

Applicants should have a strong quantitative science background, with degrees in Physics, Maths, Meteorology, Oceanography, Geophysics, or similar fields. Interest in data analysis and numerical modelling is essential, and coding experience is desirable. The position is fully funded for eligible UKRI candidates, covering tuition fees, a maintenance stipend (£20,780 p.a. for 2025/26), and a research training and support grant. Limited funding is available for international applicants, with the difference between home and international fees waived, though relocation and visa costs are not covered.
