About this position
The Forest Resources Management Group (FORM) at ETH Zürich is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to advance the modeling of forest dynamics within the Forest Studio framework. This group is dedicated to maximizing the utility of forests for current and future generations, focusing on innovative approaches to inventory, sustainable management under risk, and translating research into policy and practice. The project centers on developing climate-sensitive ecological process models that are computationally robust, transparent, and reproducible. Forest Studio is a modular modeling environment integrating ecological theory, empirical data, and modern scientific programming workflows.
The postdoc will be responsible for implementing ecological process formulations—such as regeneration, mortality, and disturbance regimes—within Forest Studio, designing modeling strategies, conducting rigorous testing and validation, and ensuring reproducible workflows. The role includes coordinating development priorities, contributing to reporting and planning, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, and engaging with international research networks. The successful candidate will publish results in peer-reviewed journals, present at scientific conferences, co-supervise MSc, BSc, and PhD students, contribute to teaching in the Forest and Landscape Management program, and support or lead workshops and research events.
Applicants must have a PhD in forestry, forest ecology, or a related field, with a strong foundation in forest ecology, management, and modeling. Experience with forest dynamics models, ecological and multi-scale datasets, scientific programming (R, Python, Rust, or similar), version control and reproducible workflows (Git, Quarto, or similar), and scientific writing is required. Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills, as well as excellent English communication, are essential. ETH Zürich offers a one-year contract with the possibility of extension for another year based on performance, aiming for a longer-term commitment subject to funding. Benefits include public transport season tickets, car sharing, sports facilities, childcare, and attractive pension plans.
ETH Zürich is renowned for its excellence in science and technology, fostering an inclusive and diverse environment. Sustainability is a core value, and the university is committed to a climate-neutral future. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Candidates should submit a letter of motivation (max. 2 pages), CV with publication list, academic certificates and transcripts, and names and contact details of 2–3 references in PDF format via the ETH online portal. For questions, contact [email protected]. Further information about the research group is available on their website.
