Postdoctoral Position in American Studies University of Graz in Austria

The University of Graz invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the field of American Studies, based at the Department of American Studies in Graz, Austria. This full-time, temporary position offers an annual gross salary of at least €70,200.20, with the possibility of overpayment depending on qualifications and experience. The contract runs until September 30, 2031, with employment starting on October 5, 2026.

The successful candidate will engage in research and publication activities, including the opportunity to write a postdoctoral thesis and pursue a Habilitation in American Studies. Responsibilities include participation in research projects in American literary and cultural studies, teaching assignments, and organizational and administrative support for the Professor of American Studies and Intermediality. The role also involves student advising, applying for research funding, and collaborating with university-wide Fields of Excellence and Core Research Areas within the Faculty of Humanities. There are opportunities for cooperation with research partners both in Austria and internationally.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in American Studies or an equivalent qualification, with extensive knowledge of recent American Studies theories, US-American literary history across all genres, and US-American culture from its beginnings to the present. Demonstrated research experience in ethnic North American literary and cultural history, drama and theater, poetry, or intermediality studies is required. Candidates should have substantial experience in university-level research and teaching, with additional expertise in editing scholarly texts considered an asset. Excellent English and German language skills, strong social competence, organizational skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are essential.
