About this position

The Applied Functional Analysis Group in the Department of Mathematics and Natural Science at Ilmenau University of Technology (Technische Universität Ilmenau), Germany, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Position (f/m/d) starting from April 1, 2026. This position is designed to promote the candidate's academic qualifications in accordance with the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz).

The successful candidate will engage in independent and collaborative research within the Applied Functional Analysis Group, aiming for high-quality publications. Responsibilities also include teaching exercise classes (3 hours per week) and participating in examinations. The group is active in advanced topics such as spectral theory of unbounded operators in Hilbert spaces, perturbation theory, selfadjoint operators, and the theory of multi-valued operators (linear relations). There are opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers in control engineering, computer science, and robotics.

Applicants must hold an excellent scientific university degree (Master's or equivalent) and a PhD in mathematics, with a strong background in the relevant areas of functional analysis. Proficiency in spoken and written English at level B2 is required. Candidates should provide evidence of their qualifications through certificates and references. The position is suitable for part-time employment, subject to institutional needs.

Ilmenau University of Technology offers attractive remuneration according to the TV-L collective agreement, including a special annual payment, 30 days of vacation per year, additional days off on December 24 and 31, a VBL pension scheme, and a family-friendly, flexible working time model. The university is committed to innovative teaching, interdisciplinary research, and a respectful, inclusive working environment. Severely disabled applicants with essentially identical professional suitability will be given preference.

The application deadline is February 1, 2026. For further information, applicants may contact Prof. Dr. Carsten Trunk by phone. To apply, candidates should submit a short CV (max. 2 pages), PhD degree certificate, Master's degree certificate with grades (or current transcript), and Bachelor's degree certificate with transcript via the university's online application portal.
