The Department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen is inviting applications for a postdoctoral position in Climate Shaming and Moralizing Politics, starting from 1 August 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. This 3-year, fully funded position is part of the European Research Council-funded project “Moralizing Politics: The Practice of Judging Others” (MoPo), led by Professor Christian Rostbøll. The project investigates the role of moral judgment in contemporary politics, focusing on how moralization can both reinforce democratic accountability and deepen polarization.

The successful candidate will focus on the subproject 'Climate Shaming: Responsibility to Human and Non-Human Others.' This research will explore the moralizing politics surrounding climate change, examining how climate activists and other groups judge or feel judged for their actions and lifestyles. The project aims to broaden the scope of moral and democratic theory to include responsibility and deliberation not only among humans but also towards the non-human environment. The postdoc will apply practice-sensitive reflective equilibrium, combining qualitative case studies with moral philosophy and democratic theory, and is expected to specify their own research within this framework.

Key responsibilities include conducting individual research and writing on climate shaming and moralizing politics, co-authoring publications, participating in workshops and conferences, and potentially teaching. The position offers funding for conferences, field research, and research visits to support the candidate’s international network and expertise development.

Applicants must have a PhD in political science, practical or political philosophy, or a related field with a strong emphasis on political theory. Required qualifications include demonstrated research aptitude in normative political theory, academic writing skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Desired qualifications include interest in democratic practice, connecting political theory and political science, and knowledge of qualitative methods such as text analysis, interviews, and ethnographic research.
