Description

The University of Bremen invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (f/m/d) to join an interdisciplinary project on AI in education, based in Faculty 12 (Education and Educational Sciences) in cooperation with Faculty 3 (Mathematics/Computer Science). The position is located at the Center for Media, Communication and Information Research (ZeMKI), within the 'Media & Education' and 'Socio-technical Systems and Critical Data Studies' research labs, led by Prof. Dr. Karsten D. Wolf and Prof. Dr. Andreas Breiter. The project, titled "Tools or Masters? On the hidden curriculum of AI appropriation in schools," explores the opportunities and risks of communicative AI use by students and teachers in secondary schools. It examines how these practices intersect with the data infrastructures, design decisions, and algorithms of AI platform providers and EdTech companies. The research employs innovative social science and HCI methods, including digital and computational approaches, to analyze instructional biases in LLMs and education-specific AI tools. Responsibilities include co-planning and implementing a mixed-methods research program, conducting interview studies with AI developers, managing data collection in field studies, research data management, quantitative data analysis, and contributing to publications. The role also involves teaching duties (2 SWS) in Bachelor's and Master's programs. Applicants must hold a completed doctorate (or be in the final phase, with certificate required for employment) in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Media Informatics, HCI, Communication and Media Studies, Educational Sciences, Educational Psychology, or Educational Technology, with strong empirical research skills. Experience with LLMs (including prompt engineering), Python and/or R, and research on educational technologies, AI tools, or social media is required. The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in interdisciplinary research, strong collaboration skills, initiative, and reliability. Additional experience with AI/LLM models and interdisciplinary projects is advantageous. The position is full-time (39.2 hours/week), fixed-term for 2 years, and funded by the University of Bremen's central research program. It offers pay grade 13 TV-L, annual bonus, regular salary increases, supplementary pension, 30 days annual leave, flexible working hours, and opportunities for professional development. The University of Bremen is committed to diversity, sustainability, and work-life balance, and encourages applications from all backgrounds, especially women and individuals with disabilities. To apply, submit your application (cover letter, CV, dissertation, additional publications if available, certificates) quoting reference number A242-25 as a single PDF via unencrypted email to wolf@uni-bremen.de by 2 December 2025. For further information, visit https://zemki.uni-bremen.de or contact Prof. Dr. Karsten D. Wolf (wolf@uni-bremen.de) or Prof. Dr. Andreas Breiter (abreiter@uni-bremen.de).
