About this position
The ODI group at the Institute of Machine Learning, ETH Zürich, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Reinforcement Learning. This position is ideal for highly motivated researchers with expertise in reinforcement learning (RL) who wish to contribute to cutting-edge research in a dynamic and international environment. The role is available immediately, with an initial contract for one year and the possibility of renewal up to three years based on performance.
Research topics include, but are not limited to: theory of online learning, reinforcement learning and data-driven control, learning in games and multi-agent RL, RLHF and alignment in large language models (LLMs), representation learning in RL, transfer learning in multi-task bandits and RL, and statistical or generative decision making. The specific project scope will be tailored to the candidate’s strengths and expertise, and the successful applicant will collaborate closely with Dr. Zebang Shen and the ODI team, as well as assist in mentoring Master’s and Bachelor’s thesis projects.
ETH Zürich offers an inspiring and collaborative research environment, access to state-of-the-art computational resources, and a broad network of global collaborators. Eligibility requirements include a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field, a strong foundation in reinforcement learning, and a record of first-authored publications at top peer-reviewed conferences (e.g., ICML, ICLR, NeurIPS, CoRL, ICRA, AAAI, AAMAS). Candidates should demonstrate a collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams. Experience with large-scale machine learning codebases is optional but considered an asset.
To apply, candidates must submit their application online via the ETH Zurich job portal, including a curriculum vitae, complete publication list, a brief research statement (2 pages), contact information for 2-3 references, and copies of academic certificates.
