About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral researcher position in the Department of Structural Engineering and Building Materials, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. This 8-month research appointment is part of a project funded by the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO Vlaanderen) and is conducted in close collaboration with the Department of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry at Ghent University and ETH Zurich (Switzerland).

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the development, optimization, and fundamental understanding of advanced polymer-based particles and their integration into cementitious and construction-related environments. The research will focus on the rational design of polymeric systems, investigation of structure–property relationships, and systematic evaluation of stimuli-responsive behavior under application-relevant conditions. The position ensures efficient knowledge transfer between fundamental polymer chemistry and applied testing in cement-based materials, with continuous feedback between synthesis and performance evaluation.

The postdoctoral researcher will collaborate closely with a PhD student within the same project, guiding experimental design, data interpretation, and methodological development. The interdisciplinary environment at Ghent University, combined with international collaboration, offers a stimulating setting for advancing scientific foundations and disseminating results through conferences and high-impact publications.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a thesis-based doctorate (PhD) in polymer chemistry, organic chemistry, or material engineering. Candidates should demonstrate independence, organizational skills, strong teamwork and communication abilities, and excellent English proficiency (spoken and written).

Funding and Benefits: The position is a full-time contract for 8 months, with remuneration according to salary scale PD1 to PD4 (doctoral degree). Ghent University offers a comprehensive benefits package, including training and professional development opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (for full-time), bicycle allowance, eco vouchers, and other social benefits.

Application Process: Applications must be submitted online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before 23 January 2026. Required documents include a CV and academic transcript (merged as one PDF), cover letter, diploma transcript (with translation if needed), and other supporting documents such as a reference letter and motivation letter. Applications sent by email will not be considered.

For further information about the vacancy, contact Prof. Kim Van Tittelboom at [email protected]. For questions about the application process, contact [email protected].

This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of polymer science and structural engineering, within a vibrant and supportive academic environment.
