Postdoctoral Researcher (Quantitative) – Refugees’ (Im)Mobilities & Political Agency University for Continuing Education Krems in Austria

The University for Continuing Education Krems, located in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Wachau, Austria, is seeking a quantitative postdoctoral researcher to join the Department for Migration and Globalisation. This full-time, three-year position focuses on two major projects: 'RESTATE: Refugees’ Political Participation and State-(Re)Making in Displacement' and 'SYREALITY: Syrian Imaginations of Europe meet Reality.' The successful candidate will work under the leadership of Assistant Professor Lea Müller-Funk, contributing primarily to RESTATE (85%) and to SYREALITY (15%).

RESTATE investigates how refugees from Afghanistan, South Sudan, and Syria perceive and interact with state institutions during displacement, and how these experiences shape their political agency and participation. The project employs a comparative, mixed-methods approach, including cross-national surveys, life histories, and online interviews, across host states such as Iran, Turkey, Uganda, and Germany. The postdoctoral researcher will co-lead quantitative data collection, develop survey instruments, supervise enumerators, and lead the case study on South Sudan. Responsibilities also include data analysis, co-authoring publications, and contributing to the project's conceptual framework and ethics procedures.

SYREALITY examines the life aspirations and migration decision-making of Syrians settled in four European cities since 2011, focusing on the impact of war, displacement, and reception contexts. The postdoctoral researcher will analyze survey data and co-author a paper with the PI.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Political Science, Geography, Sociology, or a related field (completed by 30 June 2026), with strong quantitative skills, a publication record, and advanced English proficiency. Desirable qualifications include experience with mixed methods, research in the Global South, and knowledge of East Africa or South Sudan. Language skills in Dinka, Nuer, or other relevant languages are an asset.

The position offers a gross monthly salary of EUR 5,014.30, plus 13th and 14th monthly salaries, 25 vacation days, and additional benefits such as training opportunities, health programs, and the possibility of a commuting allowance.
