This announcement celebrates the recognition of Wayne Parrott and Olin E. Rhodes Jr. as 2026 University Professors at the University of Georgia. Wayne Parrott, Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences and director of the Institute of Plant Breeding, Genetics and Genomics, has made significant contributions to plant breeding, genetics, and genomics. He has also played a pivotal role in developing UGA’s study abroad programs and new graduate programs in plant breeding, genetics, and genomics, addressing a national shortage of trained professionals in these areas. Under his leadership, the Institute has grown to include over 60 graduate students and aspires to become the top program in the nation.

Olin E. Rhodes Jr., UGA Athletic Association Professor of Applied Ecology and director of the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, has strengthened the laboratory’s research and educational impact, increasing staff and graduate student numbers and expanding faculty. His leadership has led to a significant increase in external funding and a productive relationship with the Department of Energy. Both professors are recognized for their enduring impact on the university through teaching, research, and service in the fields of plant breeding, genetics, genomics, and applied ecology.
