About this position

The aim of this project is to design, develop, and translate 3D nanoscale metamaterials for real-world applications. In this work, nanoscale particles can be assembled into macroscopic structures, creating a new class of materials where the desired properties are enhanced and scaled to a device level.

A metamaterial is a three-dimensional (3D) structure whose unique response or function stems from the collective effect that is not possible to achieve with any single material. By carefully arranging individual nanoparticles, the 3D structure and topology can be tailored for applications in magnetics, optics, electronics, biology, and mechanics.

This project aims to design, manufacture, and experimentally characterise metamaterial nanostructures.

You will receive training on nano-material synthesis at the School of Engineering as well as cutting-edge device manufacturing and characterisation at the School of Physics and the Southampton Nanofabrication Centre . Further opportunities for training and travelling will arise from national and international research collaborations, workshops, and conferences.
