The International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for the SevenFrontiers project, funded by the European Research Council. This project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the transformative effects of commodity frontiers in the Global South, which played a crucial role in the rise of early industrial capitalism between the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. The research team, led by Professor Ulbe Bosma, includes a postdoctoral researcher, two PhD researchers, and student assistants. Together, the team will study the seven most exported commodities from the Global South during this period: sugar, cotton, coffee, tea, precious metals (gold and silver), opium, and cereals. The appointed postdoctoral researcher will focus on analyzing the wide-ranging social consequences of the massive mobilization of labour and land required for the production of these commodities. The project leverages data from the Global Collaboratory on the History of Labour Relations, which provides statistical insights into global labour relations across several historical cross-sections and aims to explain significant shifts in labour relations worldwide. The position is fully funded for three years, from 1 December 2025 to 30 November 2028, and offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment at a leading research institute. Applicants should hold a PhD in history, sociology, economics, or a related discipline, and have experience with historical data analysis and an interest in global labour relations and commodity frontiers.
