About this position
PhD opportunity: Environmental Health on using flies as biomonitorsInstitution: Indiana University-BloomingtonDescriptionThe Capone Lab in the Department of Environmental Health at the School of Public Health, Indiana University, is seeking a motivated PhD student to join our group. This opportunity is ideal for a candidate with a strong background in engineering. The PhD student will work on projects using flies as biomonitors to assess and mitigate environmental contamination (e.g., microbial and chemical contaminants). The research will include studies on fly behaviors and apply dispersion models to better understand how specific odors attract flies in the environment. This project offers a unique opportunity to gain a combination of field, lab, and modelling experience. Domestic travel to field sites may be required.Preferred Qualifications:• MS in engineering or similar discipline (e.g., Environmental or Chemical Engineering). Students with only a bachelor’s degree may be considered with relevant work experience.• Previous coursework that includes mass transfer, fluid dynamics, and advanced calculus (e.g., differential equations)• Prior experience with air or odor dispersion modeling, particularly with tools such as AERMOD, CALPUFF, or CFD.• Proficiency in a coding language (e.g., R)• Excellent written and verbal communication skills. This is a funded position with a competitive stipend that includes full tuition remission. The applicant will be expected to relocate to Bloomington, IN.Interested candidates should submit a CV and cover letter to Dr. Drew Capone ([email protected]) explaining why they are interested in the project.
