Research Positions (Postdoc, Research Assistant Professor) in Physics of Information and AI
The Physics of Information and AI Lab at the University of Waterloo, led by Professor Achim Kempf, is recruiting exceptional junior scientists for multiple research positions, including Junior and Senior Postdoctoral roles (2–3 years) and Research Assistant Professorships (5 years). These positions are generously funded by the Dieter Schwarz Foundation, offering top local pay, academic freedom, and substantial support for travel and equipment. The lab is situated within the Department of Applied Mathematics and maintains strong collaborations with the Department of Physics, the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC), and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI), providing a vibrant and supportive research environment. Research in the lab spans both foundational and applied topics, including quantum information in quantum gravity, relativistic quantum information, computational complexity in adiabatic quantum computation, artificial intelligence and machine learning for quantum error prevention and correction, quantum machine learning, and quantum cloud technologies. The lab is actively engaged in practical applications through partnerships with leading institutions such as the National Research Council of Canada, IVADO in Montreal, Fraunhofer Institute IAO, and the Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence in Heilbronn, Germany. Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in Physics, Mathematics, or a related field, with 1–4 years of research experience, and demonstrate a strong record of ambitious research, clarity of thought, and excellent communication skills. The positions offer opportunities for teaching, career progression, and engagement with a dynamic research community. Application materials include a CV (with Google Scholar link), a two-page research statement, and three letters of recommendation, all submitted via AcademicJobsOnline. The application deadline is November 21, 2025, and the start date is flexible for any time in 2026. Candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
