PhD Candidate in AI Enhancement of Game-Based Learning

The Department of Computer Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD Candidate in AI Enhancement of Game-Based Learning. This position is part of the newly established AI Centre for the Empowerment of Human Learning (AI LEARN), a national initiative dedicated to advancing responsible, human-centred artificial intelligence to empower learning. The centre aims to become an internationally leading interdisciplinary hub, fostering foundational research, responsible innovation, and robust governance in AI for education. The PhD project is associated with the Technological Advancement cluster of AI LEARN. The main goal is to develop innovative applications, tools, and models for AI-driven game-based learning. The candidate will design, develop, and evaluate interactive, personalized learning experiences using advanced AI technologies. The research will involve user-centred design, participatory workshops, and extensive case studies with schools and public/private sector partners. Collaboration with a postdoctoral researcher is expected to establish frameworks and technologies for game-based learning, with a focus on creativity, problem-solving, and knowledge co-creation. The successful candidate will join the Software Engineering research group and participate in a vibrant, international research environment. Duties include conducting literature reviews, implementing participatory activities, developing software interfaces, planning and conducting case studies, collecting and analyzing empirical data, writing research articles, attending international conferences, and contributing to dissemination within the AI LEARN centre. Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Computer Science or a closely related field (learning technologies, game-based learning, serious games, or human-AI collaboration), equivalent to a five-year Norwegian program with 120 credits at the master's level. A strong academic record (B or better) is required. Proficiency in English (TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge tests) and solid knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods are mandatory. If not proficient in Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish at level A2, candidates must complete Norwegian courses during employment. Preferred qualifications include research assistant experience, relevant publications, and presentation skills in Norwegian/Scandinavian. Funding: The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. The employment period is 3 years, with a possible extension to a 4th year for duty work.
