PhD Student Position in Liver Tolerance & Autoimmunity (Immunology, Microbiology, Biomedical Research)

The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) is offering a PhD student position in the field of liver tolerance and autoimmunity, focusing on immunology and autoimmune research. This opportunity is part of the newly funded Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1700, 'Immune Regulation in the Liver: From Homeostasis to Disease,' and is integrated into the UKE graduate school. The research aims to unravel the mechanisms of immune regulation in the liver, with a particular emphasis on diseases of the bile ducts such as primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), which are challenging to treat and often progress to severe outcomes. The project will investigate the role of cholangiocytes, the epithelial cells lining the bile ducts, and their interaction with immune cells, modulated by the biliary microbiome and lipid metabolites. The successful candidate will analyze the biliary microbiome in both human and mouse models, study the impact of identified bacteria and metabolites on immune cell differentiation and activation, and use advanced techniques such as FACS, ELISA, WB, IHC, NGS, sc/snRNA-seq, and spatial transcriptomics. The research also involves in vivo mouse models of acute and chronic cholangitis and co-culture experiments with 3D-cholangiocyte organoids. Applicants should hold a diploma or master's degree in biology or related life sciences, with documented interest and experience in immunology and microbiology. The position requires high motivation, teamwork, and collaboration skills. Employment is contingent upon proof of immunization or immunity against the measles virus. The offer includes attractive compensation according to TVöD/VKA, secure employment, comprehensive onboarding, training programs, travel subsidies, family-friendly policies, health and wellness programs, and diverse dining options. The position is temporary for three years at 65% of regular weekly working hours. UKE values diversity and equal opportunities, with a commitment to increasing the proportion of women in scientific roles and supporting persons with disabilities. The application deadline is February 2, 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the UKE job portal or contact Prof. Dr. Christoph Schramm at [email protected].
