Fully Funded African STARS Fellowship in Genomics, Diagnostics, and Biotechnology Innovation (Masters+ level)

The African STARS Fellowship Programme 2026 is a prestigious, fully funded opportunity for African scientists and professionals under 35, aiming to develop the next generation of leaders in genomics, diagnostics, vaccine development, and biotechnology innovation. Supported by the Mastercard Foundation, the programme is jointly organized by the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and the Center for Africa’s Resilience to Epidemics (CARE) at the Institut Pasteur de Dakar, Senegal. The fellowship offers two tracks: the Advanced and Translational Training (ATT) Fellowship, a 4-month intensive program focused on advanced genomics for public health, diagnostic design, and vaccine manufacturing, and the Young Professional Programme (YPP) Fellowship, a 12-month program emphasizing biotechnology innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry placements. Both tracks include leadership development, mentorship, and career development support. Fellows benefit from fully funded training, including travel, visa support, accommodation, and a monthly stipend. Placement opportunities at leading research institutes, biotechnology hubs, and industry partners are provided, along with access to a strong alumni network for ongoing collaboration and professional growth. Eligibility criteria include being born in and/or living in Africa, 35 years old or younger, and holding a relevant postgraduate qualification (minimum Master’s degree; PhD is advantageous). The ATT track requires at least 3 years of research, innovation, or industry experience, while the YPP track requires at least 5 years of experience in research management, innovation, or commercialization. Demonstrated excellence in genomics, diagnostics, biotechnology, or vaccine development, strong leadership potential, and a commitment to advancing scientific capacity in Africa are essential. Fluency in English or French is required, and women are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications are open until January 31, 2026. To apply, candidates must complete the relevant application form, submit a CV using the provided template, and provide at least one letter of recommendation from academic or professional referees. For more information, visit the official website or contact the programme via email.
