JSPS Postdoctoral and PhD Fellowship for ASEAN & African Researchers in Japan (All Fields)

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) is offering its Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan – Short-term (PA), targeting researchers from ASEAN and African countries. This prestigious program enables pre- and postdoctoral researchers to conduct collaborative research in Japan for periods ranging from 1 to 12 months, under the mentorship of leading Japanese host researchers. All academic fields are eligible, including humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, making this an inclusive opportunity for a wide range of research interests. The fellowship is fully funded, covering round-trip airfare, a generous monthly allowance (¥362,000 for PhD holders and ¥200,000 for pre-doctoral researchers), a settling-in allowance of ¥200,000, overseas travel insurance, and research support up to ¥70,000 per month. This comprehensive funding package ensures that researchers can focus on their academic pursuits without financial concerns. Eligibility criteria require applicants to be from ASEAN member countries or African nations, with a PhD obtained outside Japan within the last 6 years, or currently enrolled in a doctoral program outside Japan and expected to obtain their PhD within 2 years of starting the fellowship in Japan. Importantly, previous recipients of JSPS fellowships (Standard, Short-term PE/PA, PU) are not eligible to apply again. Selection is strictly by nomination through official nominating authorities in each country, and there is no open application process.
