Doctoral candidate in accelerated edge-illumination-based phase contrast imaging for advanced material inspection

The University of Antwerp, a leading European institution, invites applications for a doctoral candidate position in accelerated edge-illumination-based phase contrast imaging for advanced material inspection. This opportunity is hosted within Imec-Visionlab in the Department of Physics and forms part of the MSCA Doctoral Network project X-CELERATE, which aims to advance novel imaging tools for studying advanced materials. The PhD project focuses on developing fast 3D X-ray phase contrast acquisition methods and innovative reconstruction techniques that integrate multiple imaging contrasts, including directional dark field models. These methods will be applied to the imaging and characterisation of advanced materials such as hydrogels, with potential impact in medical imaging, materials science, and computational imaging. As a doctoral researcher, you will actively prepare a PhD thesis, publish in high-impact journals, and present your work at national and international conferences. The position offers opportunities for training and research secondments with MSCA partner institutions across Europe, fostering a multidisciplinary and international research environment. Applicants must hold or expect to obtain a Master degree in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or related fields by the start date. Excellent academic performance and proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++) are required. Candidates must meet MSCA mobility criteria, meaning they must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Belgium for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to recruitment. Strong English communication skills are essential. The position is fully funded for up to four years, with a monthly scholarship, ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and commuting reimbursement. Doctoral researchers benefit from a wide range of courses and educational credits through the Antwerp Doctoral School, access to state-of-the-art X-ray phase contrast instrumentation, and computing infrastructure.
