The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is offering a postdoctoral scholarship focused on the population and functional genomics of biocontrol fungi, specifically targeting the yeast-like fungus Aureobasidium pullulans for sustainable control of grey mould ( Botrytis cinerea ) in strawberries. This research aims to advance sustainable agriculture by developing biological alternatives to chemical pesticides, contributing to resilient food systems and eco-friendly crop protection strategies. The successful candidate will join the Department of Plant Protection Biology, an interdisciplinary environment with strong research collaborations in integrated plant protection, chemical ecology, and resistance biology. The project involves whole-genome sequencing of over 200 A. pullulans strains from wild strawberries across Europe, with analyses including pan-genome and population structure, GWAS, and integration of transcriptomic and phenotypic data to identify genes linked to biocontrol traits. Functional validation through gene expression profiling and phenotypic assays is also part of the role. Applicants must have a PhD (completed within the last three years) in bioinformatics, genomics, microbiology, plant pathology, or a related field, with demonstrated expertise in genome and/or transcriptome analysis. Experience with fungal systems or biocontrol research is advantageous but not required. Strong communication skills in English and the ability to work independently are essential. Only non-Swedish applicants who have not previously worked in Sweden are eligible. The scholarship covers personal living expenses for 24 months and is not subject to taxation.
