Research Studentship for PhD Students in Hybrid Additive Manufacturing and Metal Forming
The Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IDMEC) in Lisbon, Portugal, is offering a Research Studentship for PhD students as part of the HyWAAM Project, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia. This opportunity is focused on the field of hybrid additive manufacturing and metal forming, specifically targeting the development of minimalist window frames through the synergistic combination of Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing and metal forming processes. The project also includes the evaluation of production costs and environmental impacts, making it highly relevant for students interested in sustainable manufacturing and industrial management.
The studentship is open to candidates who are currently enrolled in a PhD program or who can provide a declaration of intent to enroll before the contract is signed. Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a Production specialization, achieving a minimum grade of 15 out of 20, and must have completed their master's thesis in the field of hybrid additive manufacturing. Essential skills and experience include the use of machine tools, universal testing machines, industrial metrology equipment, mechanical characterization and formability tests, data acquisition systems, manufacturing and joining by forming processes, numerical simulation software for metal forming, and additive manufacturing processes for metals and polymers. Candidates should also have scientific publications in Q1 journals (as per SCImago) on hybrid additive manufacturing incorporating metal forming operations. If the academic degree was obtained abroad, it must be registered by a Portuguese institution before contract signing.
The research fellowship will last for 6 months, with the possibility of renewal, and is expected to begin in January 2026. The monthly maintenance allowance is €1309.64, paid by wire transfer, in accordance with FCT guidelines. The work will be conducted at IDMEC in Lisbon, under the scientific supervision of Prof. Carlos Manuel Alves da Silva and Prof. João Pedro da Fonseca Matos Pragana. The selection process is based primarily on the adequacy and merit of the candidate's curriculum vitae (95%), with motivation for the proposed work accounting for 5%. If necessary, interviews may be conducted, with adjusted weighting for selection criteria.
To apply, candidates must submit a curriculum vitae, academic degree certificate, proof of enrollment in a PhD program, and a motivation letter to [email protected] by December 23, 2025, 18:00 (Europe/Lisbon). The results will be communicated by email, and selected candidates must present the required certificate to sign the contract.
