PhD candidate: Bio-based and Biodegradable Wearable Electronics

This fully funded PhD position at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, in collaboration with Linköping University (LiU), offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of sustainable and bio-based wearable electronics. The project is hosted by the bio-organic electronics units at RISE, which are internationally recognized for their work in next-generation, stretchable, and printed electronic solutions. The research will be conducted in Norrköping, Sweden, with access to state-of-the-art additive manufacturing facilities and laboratories for ink and material development, electronics integration, and device characterization. The PhD candidate will focus on the development and characterization of bioderived materials for additive manufacturing, specifically targeting sustainable and biodegradable wearable electronics such as e-patches and e-textiles. Key research activities include the creation of low-impact functional inks, development of bioderived films, process optimization for printing, and system integration. The project is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network (FERNS), ensuring international collaboration and short research stays in the Netherlands and the UK. The successful applicant will be enrolled in the industrial PhD program at LiU, with supervision provided by RISE and Professor Klas Tybrandt at LiU. The program includes multidisciplinary coursework (up to 60 credits) and offers a dynamic, multicultural research environment. The position is a 36-month full-time employment contract, with a competitive salary (approx. SEK 450,000 per annum before tax), full social security, and fiscal coverage as per Swedish legislation. Funding is provided through the EU Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network. Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Material Science, Material Chemistry, Applied Physics, or a related field, with strong expertise in material development and characterization. Required coursework includes polymer physics, nanotechnology, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and material characterization. Experience with screen-printing and/or inkjet printing is desirable. Candidates must not have a doctoral degree at the time of application and must meet MSCA mobility requirements (not having lived or worked in Sweden for more than 12 months in the past 3 years). Proficiency in English and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team are essential. To apply, submit your application via the RISE career portal, including a detailed CV, motivation letter, two references, attested copies and transcripts of completed education, and any additional supporting documents. The application deadline is December 14, 2025. Short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview.
