Postdoc and PhD Openings in Global Water Modeling, Data Science & AI at Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is recruiting for one postdoctoral researcher and two PhD research fellows to join the Re-Analysis of Water for Society (RAWS) project, a $9.5M global initiative focused on high-resolution modeling of the Earth's water system. The Marston Research Group leads this transformative effort, integrating physical hydrology, human water use, and water quality into unified frameworks using advanced AI and data science techniques.
The postdoc position centers on global water data science and AI, with responsibilities including the creation of novel global datasets, leadership of international 'Deep Dive' fieldwork, and collaboration with global partners. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Hydrology, Computer Science, Earth System Science, or related fields, strong programming skills (Python/R), experience with high-performance computing, and a record of peer-reviewed publications. Preferred skills include remote sensing, machine learning, and GIS.
The two PhD positions focus on Water Systems Intelligence and Human-Water Interactions, contributing to global 'Deep Dive' studies and developing new models and insights into water infrastructure and allocation. Applicants should hold a B.S. or M.S. in Engineering, Environmental Science, Data Science, or related fields, possess strong quantitative and programming skills, and demonstrate a passion for interdisciplinary research and sustainability.
All positions offer opportunities for global collaboration, mentorship, leadership, and participation in high-impact research. The postdoc role is full-time and benefits-eligible, with competitive salary and possible supplements. PhD positions are fully funded, covering tuition, stipend, and travel. The department is among the largest and most highly ranked in the U.S., with a vibrant research community and strong international partnerships.
Application review for PhDs begins January 15, 2026, and for postdocs January 26, 2026. PhD candidates should apply via the Virginia Tech Graduate School, while postdoc applicants should submit materials via https://jobs.vt.edu/. For questions, contact Dr. Landon Marston at [email protected].
