Postdoctoral Researcher in Wood Formation and Plant Biology at Umeå Plant Science Centre
The Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC), a centre of excellence for experimental plant research and forest biotechnology in Northern Sweden, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the newly established Wood Cell Wall Architecture group led by Leonard Blaschek. This position focuses on identifying and characterising novel cellular components that control and coordinate the development of secondary cell walls in growing trees, with a particular emphasis on wood formation in Populus and Arabidopsis.
The successful candidate will drive a multi-target gene-editing screen in Populus to dissect gene redundancy in wood formation, followed by mechanistic characterisation of candidate genes using in situ microscopy, microspectroscopy, cell wall biochemistry, and proximity-labelling proteomics. The project offers flexibility for the researcher to develop their own ideas, leveraging existing resources and data from similar screens in Arabidopsis.
The research environment at UPSC and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is highly collaborative and international, with access to state-of-the-art analytical platforms, unique tree germplasm resources, and advanced plant growth facilities. The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology, where the position is based, is committed to innovative basic research that benefits forestry, agriculture, the environment, and society.
Applicants must hold a PhD in biological or biochemical sciences, possess strong English communication skills, and preferably be within three years of completing their PhD. Experience in data analysis (R/Python/Julia), cell wall biochemistry, plant in vitro culture, microscopy, gene editing, or proteomics is advantageous but not required. The position is a full-time, temporary employment for 24 months, with the possibility of extension, and is fully funded. The start date is 1 April 2026 or as agreed.
To apply, submit your application via the SLU job portal before 27 February 2026. For more information, contact Leonard Blaschek at [email protected]. UPSC and SLU value diversity and inclusivity, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds.
