PhD and Postdoctoral Positions in Neural Engineering, Neuromodulation, and BCI at Polytechnique Montréal (Canada Impact+ Awards)
The sciNeurotech Lab at Polytechnique Montréal, led by Associate Professor Marco Bonizzato, is recruiting outstanding PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows for research in neural engineering, neuromodulation, brain-computer interfaces (BCI), and mathematical optimization. These positions are supported by the prestigious Canada Impact+ Research Training Awards, which are designed to attract international and returning Canadian students and postdocs to Canada. The lab specializes in closed-loop neurostimulation systems for motor rehabilitation, neural decoding, and computational research applied to neurotechnology, with a strong emphasis on electrophysiology, signal processing, and machine learning, particularly in rodent preclinical models.
PhD students will work on projects involving the development of advanced neurostimulation systems, combining expertise in signal processing, machine learning, and neurotechnology. Postdoctoral fellows will focus on neural decoding and BCI, leveraging computational and experimental approaches. The lab environment is highly interdisciplinary, offering collaboration opportunities across electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, and neuroscience.
Funding for these positions is highly competitive: PhD students receive $40,000 per year for three years, and postdoctoral fellows receive $70,000 per year for two years, with additional salary supplements and benefits provided by the lab. The Canada Impact+ program is a one-time initiative to build research capacity in Canada’s priority areas and enhance the country’s global competitiveness.
Eligibility requirements include a relevant degree (M.Sc. for PhD applicants, Ph.D. for postdocs) in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, or a related field. Strong programming skills (Python, MATLAB), experience with signal processing or machine learning, and excellent communication skills in English or French are essential. Applicants must demonstrate prior work closely aligned with the lab’s research focus.
Polytechnique Montréal offers a vibrant research environment in the heart of Montréal, a city renowned for its cultural diversity and quality of life. The lab encourages applications from motivated individuals seeking to advance the field of neurotechnology and contribute to impactful research projects.
For more information, visit the lab’s website or the Canada Impact+ program page. The application deadline for Phase 1 is March 4, 2026.
