PhD Position: Minimal Viable Products and Innovation Pathways in Engineering

This PhD position at ETH Zürich, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mirko Meboldt in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT), focuses on the application of Minimal Viable Product (MVP) principles to hardware-oriented engineering projects. The research group specializes in technology, innovation, and development methods, aiming to increase the maturity of new technologies for industrial application and to develop tools that enhance innovation in mechanical engineering. The project investigates how MVP approaches, widely used in software and start-ups, can be systematically transferred to mechanical engineering to accelerate innovation, reduce risks, and foster iterative learning and validation cycles in technical development projects. The doctoral researcher will be actively involved in innovation and development projects, taking on experimental and methodological tasks, as well as leadership roles in both research and teaching projects that include industry participants and students. Responsibilities include planning and conducting MVP sprints, coaching teams, developing prototypes, collaborating with industry partners, and analyzing case studies to derive scientific insights. The position offers a unique environment at one of the world’s leading technical universities, with strong connections to industry, opportunities for personal and professional development in leadership and innovation, and participation in international conferences. ETH Zürich values diversity, inclusion, and sustainability, providing a supportive and open work environment. Applicants should have a strong academic background in mechanical engineering or a related field, experience in prototyping and experimental work, and excellent English communication skills. The position is available from November 2025, with a latest start date by the end of Spring 2026. Applications must be submitted online, including a motivation letter, degree certificates, and references or project examples. For further information, Prof. Dr. Mirko Meboldt can be contacted by email (no application documents).
