Genetic engineering, plastic degradation

A postdoctoral position is available in the Petriman group, led by Assistant Prof. Narcis-Adrian Petriman, at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Odense. The research focuses on the genetic engineering of the microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to acquire plastic-degrading traits, specifically targeting the breakdown of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), a major contributor to global plastic pollution. The project utilizes CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing to fuse PET-degrading enzymes onto surface-exposed proteins of the microalga, leveraging its natural motility to access and degrade PET in aquatic environments. This approach offers advantages over bacterial systems, including reduced contamination risk and enhanced environmental suitability. The position is supported by a Villum Experiment grant and provides access to state-of-the-art facilities in proteomics and bioimaging, as well as the EMBION cryo-EM facility at Aarhus University. The research environment is highly international, collaborative, and innovative, with a strong emphasis on mentoring and career development. Applicants should have a PhD in life sciences, expertise in CRISPR-Cas9, experience with microalgae culturing, and skills in mass spectrometry. Additional experience with FACS, electron microscopy, and gene editing of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is advantageous. The position offers a competitive salary, social benefits, and support for practical, social, and legal matters. Applications must be submitted electronically with all required documents in PDF format by November 15, 2025. The university encourages diversity and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates.
