PhD Student Position: Multilayered 2D Cuprate Artificial Heterostructures
The Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW Dresden) is a leading research institution dedicated to the development of new and sustainable materials and technologies. The Institute of Metallic Materials at IFW Dresden is offering a PhD student position focused on the topic of "Multilayered 2D cuprate artificial heterostructures." This project aims to advance the experimental control and fabrication of complex van der Waals materials, specifically multilayered twisted cuprate architectures, which are at the forefront of research in superconductivity and quantum technologies.
The successful candidate will join the Superpuddles lab in Dresden, working with state-of-the-art fabrication facilities and collaborating with the QTLab at the University of Naples Federico II, which specializes in superconducting quantum circuits. The research will involve innovative design and experimental challenges in three-layer van der Waals heterostructures, exploring quantum transport and non-linear photonics at low temperatures. The project is highly interdisciplinary, combining materials science, physics, and quantum engineering.
Applicants should hold a Master's degree in physics, engineering, or quantum science and technology, and possess strong motivation, ambition, and teamwork skills. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required. IFW Dresden offers a modern, well-equipped workplace on the campus of Technische Universität Dresden, flexible and family-friendly working hours, 30 days of vacation, a company pension scheme, health management programs, discounted sports offers, and a company restaurant. Employment is based on the TV-L collective agreement (EG 13, 65%), with an initial one-year contract and the possibility of extension for two more years following a successful mid-term evaluation. The anticipated start date is January-February 2026.
IFW Dresden is committed to diversity and encourages qualified women and disabled applicants to apply. Applications should include a letter of motivation, CV, Master certificate, and training certificates, submitted exclusively in electronic form as a PDF file. The application deadline is December 31, 2025. For further information, candidates may contact Prof. Dr. Nicola Poccia or Dr. Golam Haider via email.
