Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science
The Center for Translational Medical Devices (CENTMED) at New York University Abu Dhabi is seeking a Post-Doctoral Associate to advance research in the surface chemistry of implants and the fabrication of polymer medical devices. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty and researchers at CENTMED to improve the biocompatibility and osteointegration of implant materials. This involves surface modification techniques such as plasma treatment, silanization, and specialty coatings to enhance corrosion resistance. The role also includes developing lubricious polymeric coatings for catheters to reduce vascular injury during trans-catheterization procedures. Candidates will utilize advanced microscopy techniques, including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), to characterize surface modifications and map nanomechanical properties such as adhesion, friction, Young’s modulus, and surface free energy. Applicants should have experience in identifying unmet clinical needs, designing and developing medical devices, and fabricating prototypes. Expertise in polymer processing methods—filament extrusion, compression molding, injection molding, and fused deposition modeling—is essential. The position requires preparation of ISO/ASTM test specimens for mechanical testing of polymers and composites using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM), as well as estimation of glass transition temperatures via Dynamic Mechanical Analysis. The candidate will also contribute to the development of osteoconductive polymeric implants for skull base surgery and quantify biomolecule adsorption on polymeric coatings using Quartz Crystal Microbalance with dissipation monitoring, modeling plaque build-up in coronary vessels. Additional responsibilities include developing orthotic assistive devices from sustainable polymers and composites, co-developing medical devices with industry partners, and assisting with intellectual property filings. The postdoctoral associate will collaborate with CENTMED staff to prepare technology documentation and facilitate the translation of innovations to industry. Applicants must hold a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, or Materials Science and possess expertise in surface analysis, atomic force microscopy, materials characterization, and analytical skills. The employment package is highly competitive, offering housing and educational subsidies for children. Applications are accepted immediately and considered until the position is filled. Required application materials include a cover letter, CV with publication list, statement of research interests, and contact information for three reference letters, all in PDF format.
