PhD in Strategy and Entrepreneurship: Data-Driven Analysis of Strategic and Entrepreneurial Dynamics

This PhD project at the University of Bath's School of Management focuses on the intersection of strategy, entrepreneurship, and technology, with a particular emphasis on data-driven analysis. The research aims to deepen our understanding of how organizations navigate uncertainty, create value, and sustain competitive advantage in an increasingly digital world. Candidates are encouraged to propose projects that apply quantitative methods and integrate diverse data sources to investigate strategic and entrepreneurial phenomena. Advanced techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, network analysis, and econometrics may be used to analyze datasets ranging from firm-level performance indicators to digital footprints and market signals. A key aspect of the research involves combining databases that capture entrepreneurial activity—such as start-up registries, funding rounds, and innovation metrics—with sources reflecting strategic intent and organizational behaviour, including corporate communications, patent filings, and academic publications. The project is ideal for PhD candidates who are curious about how new ventures grow, signal innovation, and how digital ecosystems shape entrepreneurial success. The successful candidate should have a solid foundation in quantitative analysis or a strong willingness to develop these skills, and must fulfill the entrance requirements for a PhD in the School of Management. Applicants without an MRes degree will study on the Integrated Management programme. The project welcomes applications from under-represented groups and values a diverse and inclusive research environment. Funding is available through studentships (URSA and GRS), and self-funded or externally funded applicants are also welcome. The application deadline is February 27, 2026, and all PhD students must commence registration and training on September 28, 2026. For enquiries and to begin the application process, candidates should contact Dr Virgilio Failla at vf251@bath.ac.uk.
