Research Assistant Professor Opening in Geospatial Artificial Intelligence, Geomatics, Global Change Ecology, Urban Science and Sustainability
The Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Geomatics (RCAIG) and the JC STEM Lab of Earth Observations at the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, are seeking applications for a Research Assistant Professor (RAP) position. This opportunity is directed by Professor Qihao Weng and focuses on cutting-edge research in Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI), Geomatics, Global Change Ecology, Urban Science, and Sustainability. The department is recognized for excellence in education and research, offering advanced programs in land surveying, geomatics, urban informatics, and smart cities.
The RAP will join a vibrant research environment with access to well-equipped laboratories and interdisciplinary collaboration across five academic departments. The successful candidate will conduct research, pursue external grants, provide quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and contribute to departmental service. The position offers the possibility to supervise doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers independently.
Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field such as Ecology, Meteorology, Climatology, Natural Resources, Agricultural or Forestry Engineering, Geography, Geoscience, Environmental Science, Economics, Planning, Remote Sensing, GIScience, Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, or related disciplines. Preferred qualifications include at least two years of postdoctoral research experience, strong quantitative and methodological skills, creative research ability, effective teaching in English, and collaborative work ethic. Additional preferences are given to candidates with expertise in quantitative methods, geospatial methods, AI and machine learning, high-performance and cloud computing, scientific computing, independent research capability, a strong publication record (minimum five first-authored papers in reputed international peer-reviewed journals), and familiarity with scientific discovery processes.
The position offers a highly competitive package, including medical benefits and a gratuity upon completion of the term. The initial appointment is for two to three years, with the possibility of renewal up to six years. The RAP can apply for research funding from the Hong Kong government (Research Grant Council).
