Fully Funded PhD Studentships in Arts and Humanities at Birmingham City University (Doctoral Landscape Awards)

Birmingham City University (BCU) is offering six fully funded PhD studentships for UK/Home Students through the Doctoral Landscape Awards, an AHRC-funded initiative designed to foster a vibrant and inclusive doctoral research culture in the arts and humanities. The scheme supports professional and personal development for doctoral researchers, providing access to expert supervision, interdisciplinary training, cohort events, and facilities across BCU and a regional hub of seven universities in the East and West Midlands. Research areas include Popular Music Studies, Media and Cultural Studies, History, Heritage and Archives, Journalism, Cultural Activism, Creative Industries, Equality and Diversity in the Media Industries, Game Cultures, Film, Gender and Sexuality, Photography and Visual Culture, South Asian Media, Creative Writing, English Linguistics, and English Literature. At least one studentship each year is dedicated to a Global Majority candidate, continuing BCU’s commitment to widening participation. Funding covers home tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at the UKRI minimum rate (£20,780 per annum for 2025/26), with additional opportunities for professional development and placements. Applicants must be UK/Home Students eligible for Home Tuition Fees, not already holding a doctoral qualification or enrolled as a doctoral student, and must propose research within AHRC’s primary subject areas. The application process involves submitting an online application, funding application form, two references, and academic transcripts by 27 January 2026. Expressions of Interest are encouraged, and an application writing workshop is available. For further information, contact yemisi.akinbobola@bcu.ac.uk or visit the BCU Doctoral Landscape Awards webpage.
