Doctoral Scholarship in Optical Readout of Molecular Spin Qubits

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship in the field of optical readout of molecular spin qubits. This opportunity is hosted by the Departments of Physics and Chemistry within the Faculty of Sciences, offering a dynamic and multidisciplinary research environment. The successful candidate will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis focused on the use of optically detected magnetic resonance to read out molecular spin qubits, a cutting-edge topic at the intersection of quantum information, spectroscopy, and materials science. Key responsibilities include sample preparation, spectroscopic characterization (absorption and emission spectroscopy), and the application of optically detected magnetic resonance techniques. The project also involves investigating spin coherence times in molecular qubits using pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The research is embedded within the TSM 2 research group, under the supervision of Prof. Sofie Cambré and Prof. S. Van Doorslaer, providing access to a collaborative and stimulating academic environment. In addition to research activities, the doctoral candidate will publish scientific articles related to the project and participate in a limited number of teaching and research support tasks, such as supervising practica. The position offers a one-year doctoral scholarship, with the possibility of applying for additional follow-up research funding in collaboration with the supervisors. The monthly scholarship amount is determined according to the university’s standard rates, and additional benefits include ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting. Most work will be conducted at Campus Drie Eiken, building N, which provides a modern and supportive working environment. Eligibility requirements include holding a Master’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related field, with excellent academic results. Candidates should demonstrate motivation, commitment to doctoral research, and teaching competences aligned with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision. Research qualities should match the faculty and university policies, and applicants are expected to act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity, and cooperation. A background in optical and/or electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy is considered an asset. The planned start date for the position is March 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications must be submitted online via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform by January 29, 2026 (midnight Brussels time). Required documents include a motivation letter, academic CV, and contact details of at least two previous supervisors. The selection committee will review all applications promptly after the deadline, and eligible candidates will be informed about the next steps in the selection procedure. For questions regarding the job, applicants may contact Prof. Sofie Cambré at [email protected]. The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply. The institution has received the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award and invests in the growth and well-being of its employees.
